A full strength team of 16 U16 girls represented Woking in the HCGL finals at Surbiton HC on Sunday 30th April.
The semi-final vs. Surbiton allowed Woking to play their best hockey. Woking dominated throughout and impressed with determination, teamwork and skill. The goals from Maddie Goldhawk, Abbie Gardiner and Zoe Carter were well considered, brilliantly set-up and expertly supported. Surbiton managed to pull one back due to a penalty flick but the 3,1 win was a fair reflection of the game.
The final vs. Canterbury was a much more contested match. The nil all draw at full time followed heart stopping moments at both ends of the pitch. Alice Cobb and Helena Hubbard shared the Woking GK duties for the day and both made very important saves supported by an excellent team of Bryony Woods and Saara Wyne in defence. Canterbury failed to score from many short corners and this continued through 10 nail biting minutes of extra (sudden death) time.
Eventually the final went to Penalty flicks. Zoe Carter, Brydie Ault, Maisy Ellis, Bryony Woods and Ella Chattock took for Woking whilst Helena Hubbard showed nerves of steel in goal. Canterbury would have gone into the lead but their goal was disallowed because their player struck before the Umpire's whistle. Neither team had scored at 3 shots each. Brydie Ault then skillfully scored in the bottom left corner and Helena Hubbard saved Canterbury's next shot to win for Woking.
There are many thanks to be given. Camps and Chris Betts coached the team on the day and kept calm through out. Thanks to the members from the club who took time to join the parents in support and helped encourage from the sidelines. Zoe Carter has been an inspiring and dedicated Captain all season. Many of the team have played at Woking together for eight seasons (half their lifetime) coached by Ashley Carter and Chris Betts. This year they have gelled together to succeed in for some their last year as Colts.
